Update

Phew! All the posts and comments are back. But I’ve yet to access how much damage has been done and have to rework on the sites look. It’s 4.17 am now and my body is asking for some rest. So, better I go to bed before I look into all this.

So, am I disappointed?

On the contrary, I’m not. In fact, I’m overwhelmed. Being a blog focusing on a niche subject of Arunachal Pradesh and having very limited reach, I was not expecting that much vote (see the result stats here) and considering the other widely read blogs to which it was pitted against, I was expecting Arunachal Diary to be in the bottom in category to which it was nominated for. But you’ve proved me wrong. Thank you guys for taking out your valuable time to vote for Arunachal Diary.

Also congratulation to all the wonderful blogs that has won the award in the categories to which their blog was nominated.

Ever since I stopped allowing anonymous comments on my blog following allegation on me, I’ve been asked by my friends and readers of AD alike to review my decision on blocking anonymous comments. Now, I’m in a fix.

Should I allow anonymous comments in my posts and risk personal attack on me again? Would I be able to ignore the comments that is not to my taste?

Well, I need your help here. Should I or shouldn’t I re-allow anonymous commenting in my blog?

Pour in your views through comments (for those having Google/Blogger or Open ID) and through your votes (who want to share their views anonymously) in AD Poll at sidebar. Poll closes 19th of May.

Update:

For those without Google or Blogger or Open ID and those who want to comment anonymously can make use of ‘other’ option in the Arunachal Diary Poll to put in their comments/views on whether I should or shouldn’t enable anonymous commenting

Have you ever wondered how the Department of Tourism, Government of Arunachal Pradesh got it’s tagline?

No!

There are some departments in the state government who doesn’t seem to know what ‘Plagiarism’ is; and shamelessly uses work created by others as if it was created by them. And I feel sick whenever I come across this tagline ‘Gateway to Serenity’ -used by Directorate of Tourism, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, to promote tourism of the state in ads, their site, etc. It reminds me of how one of my friend was cheated off his work without even acknowledging him.

The story dates back to about a decade ago when the state government, in order to promote tourism of the state, decided to makeover the Department of Tourism by giving it a logo and a tagline. The Directorate of Tourism, then decided to hold a logo designing and ‘slogan’ competition-the winning entry of which would be used as the logo and tagline of the Department. Like so many other enthusiasts-professionals and amateurs alike- two very creative young boys just out of the teens also decided to vie for the prize money-the winning of which would somehow suffice their pocket money for a month or so. So they designed a logo to be submitted to the Directorate of Tourism for competition. One of them, being very good at words and creative, tried his hand at the slogan competition as well.

The day came, the logos and the slogans were displayed, judged by the experts and winners announced. Confident after the spectator’s reaction over the slogan and logos designed by them-they thought they would bag the prize; but nowhere in the winners list, their names propped up. Thinking that the best man might have won they left the exhibition, satisfied over the spectator’s reaction.

But to their horror, when the Department of Tourism finally released their logo and tagline, the tagline submitted by my friend was etched with the logo – in same font style and in bold letters-‘Gateway to Serenity’. Since, the slogan was not a prize winning entry; they went to Directorate of Tourism to enquire how his slogan is being used for the promotion of the Department? Had his slogan adjudged the best entry contrary to that declared during the day so as to be used as department’s tagline?

Worst nightmare had yet to come. The then Director of the department instead of acknowledging and telling why his slogan has been used or if it had won the best slogan award-shoo them away. The Director said, “You are such a young boy, you would get much better opportunity later.” Only he knew, the boy was a college grad, unemployed at that time, had come to know, how about his entry is being used by the Department and why he is not acknowledged about it and not to claim the prize money. (I vaguely remember, only winning entry was to be used for promotion purpose and rest other entries were not supposed to be used. There was no condition stated in the advertisement for competition that the entries would become the property of the Department and they could use it at their discretion). Wonder, what impact that incident had left in the young minds! Feeling deeply hurt, they left the office not knowing what to do. Had it been today, I’m damn sure my friend would have sued the state government for ‘Plagiarising’.

I wonder, why he was not acknowledge while his work was used? Was the entire judgment procedure biased and manipulated? Wasn’t it the moral responsibility of the department to acknowledge his work (even if it was not adjudged the best and even if it was the property of the department as is the case with some contests) when the department used it?

No, I’m not writing this post to claim for his award after a lapse of about a decade or to check if the entire judgment procedure was biased etc. But because, I feel that he was wronged and because his creativity, his psyche must have been affected with that single incident. May such incident never happen to anyone else in the future.

(logo source: Arunachal Tourism)

It’s been a year since first post appeared on this blog. I made foray into blogosphere during the month of January 2006, but it took me nearly 7 months to decide what should I be writing about-would it be a personal account, a photo blog, etc., etc., and finally I decided why not I write about the issues related to Arunachal Pradesh? And so, I started with post on the attitude of Directorate of Higher and Technical Education towards the students while sending them for higher studies outside the state and the problems faced by them (Find it here).

A time came when I thought, that’s it, I’ m no more blogging, but support from Cho and Tallo and their contribution to Arunachal Diary and the words of encouragement from you readers kept me going.

The thought that I would be making a trip to the school (albeit for 1 day only) which has produced so many bureaucrats and technocrats of this state and which has reminiscence of my early school days, quite excited me. But when I embarked upon the trip, it seemed as if the thought would remain just a thought. As soon as I reached Itanagar from Ziro, I was told that the bus on which I booked the ticket for Tinsukia has been cancelled because of the ‘Bandh’ at Nagaon, Sibsagar and Golaghat Districts of Assam and there was no seat available for the next day. This shattered all my excitement and I was about to decide for the trip back to Ziro when a person came for cancellation of his ticket to Deomali the next day. I thought, lady luck is smiling upon me and I immediately grabbed this opportunity and booked the ticket upto Deomali for next day.

The next afternoon (buses depart for Deomali at 2.00 p.m) when I embarked the bus, the co-passengers were discussing that another Bandh has been called at Dibrugarh district the next day. I felt like canceling the ticket then and there but nevertheless I embarked upon the journey, after all the urge to visit the school after almost 22 years prevailed on me. I just gambled that if everything goes alright i.e., if the bus doesn’t break down on the way, I would be reaching Deomali well before time the Bandh becomes effective. And the gambling was a success as I reached Deomali early morning the next day, without a hitch. I booked return ticket for the evening, normally the buses depart Deomali in the afternoon, but owing to Bandh the bus was departing in the evening that day. After freshening up and having breakfast at friend’s residence (only Government Inspection Bungalows are available at Deomali and it was totally booked that day) I headed for Narottam Nagar in a Taxi (during my school days, it was difficult to get Taxi from Deomali).

And here I was, after a long 22 years, back at Ramakrishna Mission School, where I spent my 3 and a ½ years of initial schooling days.

It brought back all the memories. The memory of me standing under the shed of tree, taking shelter from scorching heat and shirking away from the compulsory football game in the evening, when my fellow mates would be totally indulged in the game. The only time I would be in the game or rather pretend to be in the game was whenever teacher came for inspection.

Mahavir Stadium

I moved to the main School Building. The building looked all the same- the class rooms, assembly area etc., except that it has graduated from 2-storeyed building to 3-storeyed one and a new structure that came up adjacent to the main building. However, it reminded me of how we used to look out through the window to search for our parents in the taxis that arrived to pick up their wards after the last paper of exam. Everyone just wanted to leave hostel as soon as possible for summer break and it was like who would be leaving the hostel first. It felt bad when you were the last to leave the hostel.

Main School Building

The Assembly Area

From there I headed towards the Hostel which is some stone throw away from the School and after taking due permission of Hostel Warden Maharaj, I went round the hostel dormitories, the mess and the prayer hall where we used to offer prayer every evening. The sound of conch, the hymns ‘Khandana Bhava…..’ reverberated in my ears.

The Prayer Hall

The Dormitory

Hostel Warden’s Office and Seniors Hostel

I thanked Warden Maharaj for allowing me to relive my hostel days and bade him goodbye. I walked past the auditorium which was used for screening of movies besides other school functions and all the movies (albeit only patriotic) viz., Jhansi ki Rani, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Shivaji, Rana Pratap etc., screened on sundays for our entertainment through 25 mm projector (there was no television set in the hostel in those days) flashed in my memory. I remembered the queue outside the canteen to buy biscuits and snacks to be taken during the movie.

The Auditorium

I was so deep down the memory lane that I forgot that I had to catch the bus. So, I hurried to the taxi and while on the way to Deomali, it felt like I just completed my exams and was heading home for summer break.
